Khin & Maxine

For this collaborative output, Maxine and I decided to do a combination of our constant outputs. Maxine’s output is experimenting with oil pastels and getting to know the medium while my output is creating chibi characters in my own style. So we did what we usually do each week but the final piece is a combination of my chibi character with Maxine’s oil pastel landscape.

We found a common interest in Studio Ghibli movies, specifically Kiki’s Delivery Service so, we decided that I would draw Kiki as a chibi, and Maxine created a background with her oil pastels. We chose a recognizable scene from the movie and worked with that.

Here is the reference picture we worked with:

My Process

So, as I usually do, I started off with a rough sketch of the chibi character and then created a clean line art.

Next, I worked on the hair, starting with the base color then adding two layers of shading. Lastly, adding a bit of highlight on the top of the head.

Then, I colored and shaded in the bow and dress.

Next, I worked on the eyes which is a whole process that I’ve discussed in a previous output.

After the eyes, I colored in the skin, added some blush and shading.

Next, I colored in the broom and used different colors to create some dimension and definition.

Lastly, I added Maxine’s landscape as the background.
