For this week’s output, I decided to focus on creating my style for hair. I paid extra attention to how I color it in because I decided I wanted a cleaner line art and create the definition of the hair using shading techniques.

So, I started drawing a clean line art by using mostly single strokes which were harder to draw than expected. However, I found out that by using the smoothing function of the brush tool, it was easier to control where the stroke was being drawn, it also reduced shakiness and overall smoothed out the lines. Also, I’ve decided that on all of my characters, I’ll be drawing the little antenna hearts on the hair strands that stick out at the top of the head as a signature.

Outline/Line art

After drawing the outline, I moved on to the base color. I’ve decided to have one solid color for the base which I can work off of for the shading.

Base hair color

For the first shading layer, I followed the outline but added a few extra marks to give some definition, this is something I still need work on but I actually like how it turned out for this particular drawing. I also don’t intend on making this layer of shading perfect because I will have another layer of darker shading on top of it.

First layer of shading

For the second layer of shading, I made it a bit more subtle than the first layer and I focused more on using this layer for the top of the head.

The second layer of shading

Lastly, I added highlights on the bangs and the right side of the hair. I don’t really like having too much highlight but I find it important to add it even if it’s subtle. I also added two small white marks on each side of the head, I think it just brings the look together.
