I found this reading extremely useful especially because of the engineering background that I have and now that I am trying to get into IDM, this reading helped me further under what design thinking really is. I also found it interesting that designers try to find the root of the problem. I think it’s definitely true that not only designers can think this way. For example, when I was studying Aviation, I had to perform maintenance on aircraft and troubleshooting was always an important process that we had to perform whenever there was a problem. The purpose of troubleshooting is to find the problem and figure out why a certain component or system is not functioning properly. However, directly solving the problem was not the goal, the goal was to figure out what the root of the problem was, and how to prevent it from happening again. I think this corresponds to designers finding solutions for their problems. The important thing to remember is to only solve the problem at hand but understand why it’s a problem, how we can solve it but also how can we prevent it from happening again. This plan to intervene before anything can even go wrong is a great way to prevent unnecessary issues from arising.
